Manual Thermostats

You remember the ‘old school’ thermostats. Just like TV before the remote control, you had to get up and turn it up or down every time you wanted to change the temp. It’s a bit of a hassle if you’re trying to save on energy bills because you might be adjusting the temperature every day.

My husband used to turn down the heat at night. I didn’t mind at all…except when I got up to make coffee and the house was still cold!

If we forgot to turn the temp up or down, it was a hassle. I was thrilled when we got a programmable thermostat.

Programmable Thermostats

When we moved to our new house in Colfax, we had a programmable thermostat. It was a 7-day which means that we could program it to a different temperature every day of the week. I appreciated the convenience of saving energy and not having to think about it every day.

With a programmable thermostat, not only do you not have to remember to turn it down, but it can be programmed to turn up the temp 30 minutes before you get up for work… no more cold feet in the morning!

Smart Thermostat Tips

Smart thermostats or connected thermostats take it a step further. Yes, you can still program your thermostat – although some smart thermostats work to predict your use for you.

Before you install your smart thermostat…

  • A smart thermostat works with most central air systems, may not work with mini-splits, and is not recommended for heat pumps
  • You may need a ‘C’ wire
  • Average savings is 8% per year but could be as high as 15% according to Energy.gov
  • Some smart thermostats can also be controlled through your Alexa
  • Smart thermostats can be controlled through your smart phone

A smart thermostat is a great addition to your HVAC system. Put it together with an efficient central air system, and you’ll be one step farther to having a truly smart home.
