Smart thermostats are high on the list of planned home improvements according to a study done by Houzz and CEDIA. The study found that of people who are planning to remodel, 45% plan to install a smart thermostat. What do you need to know before you install one?
Manual Thermostats
You remember the ‘old school’ thermostats. Just like TV before the remote control, you had to get up and turn it up or down every time you wanted to change the temp. It’s a bit of a hassle if you’re trying to save on energy bills because you might be adjusting the temperature multiple times every day.
“My husband used to turn down the heat at night. I didn’t mind at all…except when I got up to make coffee and the house was still cold!”
“If we forgot to turn the temp up or down, it was a hassle. I was thrilled when we got a programmable thermostat.”
Programmable Thermostats
Programmable thermostats come with a range of features, including a 7-day schedule that allows you to program it to your preferred temperature during specific days and times. You’ll love the convenience of saving energy and not having to think about it every day.
With a programmable thermostat, not only do you not have to remember to turn it down, but it can be programmed to turn up the temp 30 minutes before you wake up… no more cold feet in the morning!
#3
Check your thermostat.
Then, as simple as it seems, check your thermostat. There can be several problems that are simple to solve.
Is the thermostat working? If it’s not showing anything on the screen, perhaps you need to change the batteries. (Easy fix!)
Is your thermostat set to “Heat”? It could be that someone in the house changed the thermostat or even that your programmable thermostat has the wrong setting.
Is the fan blowing? If you turn the furnace fan to ‘ON’, it should kick in which would tell you that your furnace has electricity and that the fan is working.
Smart Thermostat Tips
Smart thermostats or connected thermostats take it a step further. Yes, you can still program your thermostat – although some smart thermostats work to predict your use for you.
